A sunset reflected in a mirror

What ACT is

Acceptance and commitment therapy starts from a realistic place: some discomfort is part of a meaningful life. Instead of trying to eliminate anxious thoughts or hard feelings first, you learn to hold them more lightly and still do what matters to you.

The core pieces are getting clear on your values, noticing thoughts without believing every one of them, and taking small, committed steps.

Who it suits

  • Perfectionists who wait until conditions are right
  • ADHD adults stuck in "I should be able to do this"
  • People living with chronic illness or pain
  • Anxious overthinkers who are tired of arguing with their brain

How I use it

I am ACT-trained and often combine it with CBT and DBT. ACT is especially useful when the problem is not a lack of insight but being stuck anyway.

Sessions are $180 for 60 minutes after a $200 initial assessment. I am in network with Anthem, Aetna and United through Alma, and provide superbills for other plans. See all fees.

Questions

Is ACT the same as giving up?

No. Acceptance means making room for what you cannot control so you can put your energy into what you can.

How is ACT different from CBT?

CBT often works on changing thoughts. ACT works on changing your relationship to them.

Does ACT work for ADHD?

Yes. It can reduce shame and help you act on priorities instead of waiting for motivation.
