Body doubling helps my ADHD. What if nobody is available?
By Andrea Lynn Piazza, MA, LPCC, LMHCBody doubling, working alongside another person, helps many people with ADHD start and stay on task. The catch is that people aren't always available when the dishes or the tax return need doing. The good news is that body doubling works for a few different reasons, and some of those you can recreate on your own.
What body doubling actually does
It helps in two separate ways. It helps you start, because someone else's presence makes the beginning feel less optional. And it helps you keep going, because a person in the room gives your attention something to anchor to. Working out which one you need makes it easier to find a substitute.
When the problem is starting
- Schedule a start time with someone, even if they don't stay. "I'm starting at 2, text me at 2:05."
- Use a start ritual. Same playlist, same drink, same chair. Over time the ritual does some of the work.
- Make the first step tiny and set a five-minute timer. Starting is often the hardest part; continuing is easier.
When the problem is staying on task
- Virtual coworking. Online body doubling rooms run all day, and many are free.
- "Work with me" videos. Recorded study or cleaning sessions give you ambient company on demand.
- A phone call while you do something mindless, like folding laundry while catching up with a friend.
- Ambient presence. Working in a café or library can be enough for some people.
- Low-pressure check-ins. A message every 30 minutes saying what you've done.
Be realistic
None of these work every time, and some days nothing will. That doesn't mean you've failed at body doubling. It may mean your capacity is low that day, or the task is bigger than it looks.
