Why coming home after a great trip can feel so bad

By Andrea Lynn Piazza, MA, LPCC, LMHC

It's common to feel low after coming home from a good trip, especially one with lots of company. Sometimes the hardest part of a good trip is realizing how different you felt while you were there. That contrast can show you what everyday life is missing.

Why the crash happens

  • Contrast. You go from people, novelty and plans to a quiet flat and a normal Tuesday.
  • Loss of connection. If the trip involved friends or family, you may have had more company in a week than in the past month.
  • Back to unresolved things. The problems you left are still there.
  • An empty calendar. Weekends and empty days can feel harder than busy ones.

Some sadness after a trip is completely normal. It doesn't need to be treated as a problem.

What the crash can tell you

Sometimes the crash is just tiredness and readjustment. Sometimes it shows you something useful: that you're lonelier at home than you'd realized, or that you need more routine, more people or more to look forward to.

Making re-entry easier

  • Leave a buffer day before going back to work if you can.
  • Plan one thing for the first week back, like a meal with a friend.
  • Keep one habit from the trip, such as a morning walk.
  • Put the next thing on the calendar, even if it's small.

When to get support

If the low lasts more than a couple of weeks, or the trip made you realize how isolated you feel, it may be worth talking to someone. Read you can be independent and still want someone beside you, or book a free 15-minute consult.
