What it is

Trauma is not only stored in thoughts. It shows up as a racing heart, a clenched jaw, shutting down, or being unable to sit still. Somatic therapy pays attention to those signals and works with them directly.

In practice that means noticing sensations, grounding, breath and posture, orienting to your surroundings, and learning what helps your body come down from alarm. As a former dancer, I pay a lot of attention to what bodies are saying.

How I use it

I bring somatic work into sessions alongside EMDR, parts work and talk therapy rather than as a stand-alone method. It works well by video, since you practice in your own space. I am not a certified Somatic Experiencing practitioner. If you want that specific method, I can help you find one.

Who it suits

  • People who feel anxious or on edge without knowing why
  • People who go numb, freeze or dissociate
  • People who understand their trauma intellectually but still react

Cost

Sessions are $180 for 60 minutes after a $200 initial assessment. I am in network with Anthem, Aetna and United through Alma, and provide superbills for other plans. See all fees.
