"If I don't do it, nobody will": when responsibility becomes a trap

By Andrea Lynn Piazza, MA, LPCC, LMHC

"If I don't do it, nobody will" is often partly true. That's what makes it such an effective trap. Sometimes things really would fall through. And sometimes the belief keeps you carrying far more than your share, long after it stopped being necessary.

Why it feels true

If you're the one who usually notices, plans and follows through, other people get used to not doing it. The gap you'd leave is real, because you've been filling it. That doesn't mean the gap is permanently yours.

It's especially common in oldest daughters, people who grew up in unpredictable homes, and people in helping jobs, where stepping in once kept things from going badly.

The hidden costs

  • You're tired in a way rest doesn't fix
  • You resent people who aren't doing anything wrong, just less
  • Others don't build the skills, because you always step in
  • You lose track of what you actually want to do versus what you feel you have to

Questions to sort it out

  • Is this genuinely mine, or did I just get there first?
  • What would actually happen if I didn't do it? How bad, and for how long?
  • Has anyone been asked, or have I assumed?
  • Am I doing this because it matters, or because not doing it feels unbearable?

Putting some of it down

  • Hand off one thing completely, including the planning, not just the doing.
  • Let something be done differently, or less well, without fixing it.
  • Say out loud what you're carrying. People often don't see it.
  • Expect discomfort. Letting go usually feels wrong before it feels better.

When to get support
